Let's start with the fact that in the movies the viewer simply looks away, and in the games is directly involved. When you watch horror videos you get worried about the hero, but in games you have a double feeling. Why the double? You worry about yourself and after for the character. You could also add horror in books. Like the works of Howard Lovecraft. In books, horror is so scary because of our imagination.
